Blue Cow was first used as a metaphor in our business training/ personal development company. It was based on the CBeebies children's TV character Blue Cow (now off the screens) in which a blue cow would leave her field, go off and have great adventures - she wanted to be a ballerina, appear in the olympics, fly in a space rocket and so on - all the while her brown cow friends in the same field would tell her cows can't dance/appear in the olympics/fly to the moon etc. But of course Blue Cow does, and we, the viewers watch her do it. When she comes back and tells them how great it was they don't believe she did it.

We used the fact that most people stay in the field and moan (brown cows) rather than leave it and experience life to the full like blue cow does. Also we used it as a metaphor to describe what colleagues/friends/well meaning family members tend to do and say (brown cows) when we want to follow our heart; follow a dream and so on. They tell us it can't be done, or its risky or we are getting above our station and so on.

So the blue cow icon should be a cartoon we think - it should be blue (of course), cute, adorable, curious and adventurous. It should speak of the positive, optimistic, blue cow who has the courage to keep leaving her field. The words "Blue Cow Global" should be incorporated too.

ask to join the blue cow field and you'll realise why he won - he did something none of you did. He told a story. It wasn't the funkiest design, perhaps not as refined as some of the others, but he understood story. The most important quality a designer has.
