Tóm tắt cuộc thi

Project goal: a set of 3 prototyping cases, that would fit some prototyping boards inside.
Board types: Raspberry Pi 3, and Odroid-C2.
The project is about a networking solution, with 3 components:
1. a battery module
2. a disk module
3. a main module
Each of the modules have a board inside. Either a Raspberry pi or an Odroid.
The main module only has the board. The battery module also has a battery inside. The disk module also has a 2.5 inch disk inside. Disk dimensions: 100x69.85x9.5 (mm).
The battery board also has a battery inside. Dimensions: 140x74x15 (mm).

The boards inside must not have their own ports physically exposed. Instead, only a few ports will be exposed, but only through some connectors to the original ports. The resulting ports don't need to be on the same sides or orientation as the original ports.

The casings must be stackable on top of each other and a communication port must be fitted between them.
If 2 or more casings are stacked, the stack must be very stable.

I need 3 types of casings, they must be nearly the same, or at least express the same concept: ports at the back, leds at the front:
1. one of them must only provide a network port (RJ45), a USB port and a power port (micro usb), and some indicators (leds): power status, internet connection status, cpu load (3 stages - either separate leds, or just one led with colors), stack connection (shows where are other devices connected in the stack (up/down)
2. One must only provide the power port, and indicators: power status, disk usage
3. One must only provide the power port and indicators: power status, battery load, battery status

The designs must be in 3d printable format, and JPG rendered as well.

I attached some previous designs just to give you an idea of the results needed.
Please do not provide same designs. The attached files are just to give you an idea.

Raspberry pi dimensions: https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/hardware/raspberrypi/mechanical/RPI-3B-V1_2.pdf
Z-dimension - aproximate to 30mm.

ODroid dimensions:

85x56 mm
Z-dimension - aproximate to 30mm.

Hi, guys ! Thank you all for submitting your cool design ideas !
As you know, I must choose the winning design in the next 2 weeks, therefore I will initiate some private chats with some of the best designs that I like most, in order to assess the tasks that still need to be done.

    Thanks again !
    Great work !

@farethazedy, a very nice, simple design. Looks great. What does the down-facing side look like ?
Also: isn't the port a bit too large ? Those look more like rods, rather than wires.
I would like to see more info about the inner placing of devices, inside the casing. Also, some sizes would be great !

    Thanks !

@Yohanesujang, these designs look a lot better than the previous one.
    Yes, ventilation holes are necessary.
It's still a bit unclear if you really got the connector part sorted out. In the last picture, it's un clear how are the female and male ports designed, and how exactly will the devices connect, but this just seems a minor issue.
All in all, good feedback for you.
Maybe work a bit on the display/leds. That part kinda seems left out.

@Kathire, the design you made seems to have nothing to do with what is requested in this contest. I need individual devices, that stack on top of each other. There won't be just 3 modules. I should be able to stack more than 3. There are 3 types of modules, but I should be able to stack 5 modules of the same type, if I wanted to.

Kathire I might not have been clear. The devices must all look the same, no matter what's inside. They must be stackable, and the stack must look nice as well

@BroDesigns, Entry #6 is a bit too much. Surprisingly, I like the design made by Yohanesujang better than your entry #6 , because it's much simpler. Don't over do it.

@Yohanesujang: The design you provided is very nice through its simplicity. Here's what I like and what I don't like:
    - first of all, I don't understand how the connector is working. I have seen the Female port, but I don't understand what the male port looks like. It seems like it needs to be sticking out, or something
    - this design looks very stable. I like how the devices are slim, and flat.
    - the indicator LEDS are not so cool-looking. But I suppose I could replace that with a small display
    - even though I really like the simple design, it would be great if it would look a bit more ... cool. :)

A suggestion, with the USB port. The male connector might be foldable, somehow.

ok some minor but er important things to clarify,
    overall size of the box?
    connector type and size
    some parts for reference(disk/battery)

I have made a preliminary model to get all the parts correct, the dimensions are width and length 21.76cm 9.76cm height being 3.36cm(~3.40cm)
it houses the battery and the main module perfectly(it can house two batteries stacked up on one another and leaves some space to the side 14cm x 1cm with 3cm height)

one more thing to clarify on the disk "Disk dimensions: 100x69.85x9.5 (mm)." are those two different disks? 100x69 / 85x9.5 ?

I will finish up on the renders later tonight (~6 hours) so you can see and evaluate the current state while I work towards a more flashy design (since it's mostly a box so far a cool one but still a box :) )

Hi, there ! Sorry, I receive no notification when I get a new reply here. So I have to check the full conversations myself, to see when somebody wrote something. Sorry for just seeing now your questions.
      1. I will extend the competition a few more days.
      2. There is only one disk size. It's one of the standard SSD Sata disks. It's just one description, 3 dimensions. One of the dimensions is 69.85 cm. Found it on wikipedia.
      3. The connector is open for proposals. For example, there is one candidate that used USB. For all I care, those connectors can be whatever type, as long as I can fix 4 wires to it. It would be better if it's something that is proven to work, like USB.

Bear in mind that the cases are meant to be used in a proof of concept project presentation.
I would rather have them made in plastic, as it's easier to print. So I'm gonna need STL files.

      Thanks again !

oh and what materials would you use glass? rubber? metal, that is what I would use, well I will render first and we can do reworks later :)

    [...continued]
    3. In the end, the user can add as many devices to one stack as he pleases (with some limits, of course). So a stack can have 1 device, or can have 4 devices (or so). Of course, this adds to the tower's instability. For example, one of these stacks can have a battery module on the bottom, 2 disk modules, and 1 main module. Instability should be taken into account.
    4. Communication between the modules will be handled through the up-down connectors, so yes, they will communicate by stacking. All of the modules will also have wireless connectivity, for communicating with other similar stacks of devices.
    5. No components are replaceable inside a module.

Thank you very much for the informative and adept answers, also for your consideration and the overall openness of communication. I'm going to have to come up with some good ideas to come on par with the competition :)

      Thank you for the information!
and I hope I can equal in design

and lastly maybe promote your contest and extend if you want more entries it's an interesting idea after all.

BroDesigns, I'm just gonna give you feedback here, so that everyone can receive the same feedback:
First of all, thanks a lot for submitting some ideas.
So far, there are some things that I really like, and some things that I'm not sure about.
    Second entry:
    1. I enjoy the side red-band where would be a great place to have the connector between the devices.
    2. I would like to see more continuity on the devices, when stacked. They need to appear as if there is only one device, when stacked.
    3. The devices are a bit chunky. Maybe widen them a bit, so they would appear thinner.
    4. Don't focus too much on that cover. It's great, but I'm more interested in the design of the devices themselves, rather than the design for a potential cover, that I'm not certain I'm gonna use, after all.

    Entry #3 :
    1. They seem like connecting only through that center pillar, and that's a great idea ! They seem to be levitating from each other. This idea has great potential for me.
    2. Great idea with the side lighting. It just looks great.
    3. Same thing, I need more unity for the system as a whole. I don't know how, but I like the middle pillar idea a lot, but don't like the fact that the devices are turned from each other. OCD kicks in.
    4. Also, I don't like they're pointy. Don't know why, just doesn't seem aesthetically pleasing, or something.

Thanks again ! Keep up the good creativity !

    Hi there !
First of all, thanks Theodor for asking some questions, to help me better understand what information is missing from my presentation.
Here are some answers for your questions:
    1. The cases should all be the same size, no matter what's inside of them. But, taking into consideration that they're going to be stacked, the stack, as a whole, should also look nice.
    2. The fitting between modules should be done in a very simplistic way. There is no need for screws or anything else. Worse comes to the worst, fitting could just be done gravitationally. Another option would be some magnetic clipping, when adding one system to the stack

ok most important question, height for the whole construction, and if the different housings are with different dimentons(boards and battery for instance are one next to another in case #1 and there is just one board in case #2 1 would be twice as large as 2 therefore 2 should be on top in the stack for balance concerns) But I would like to have them all be the same height and width, so should I proceed with that idea or make 3 differently sized cases(keep in mind prototyping 3 casings is more costly than one single one with different fittings for different setups )

I'm working on it, more likely I'm interested, saw it yesterday and will do what I can in the next few days :)

      Questions:
      * Overall Size of the box, with the communication between them, or should it be solved with the way you have in the provided images, plug on top :) to stack them up
      * In a sense we are building 3 minicomputer cases that should fit together as one single mid tower and how should the maintenance and fittings be carried out, just stick the component and screw it down?
      * Finally how do you account for the different disks and drives (SSD/HDD) can parts be taken out freely or just plugged in/out

      Some parts might help.

That's it from me I will see if I can manage to make you a nice case :)
