Relief Print Instructions
Objective:
Reread the section called Relief Process. This section describes the most basic of all printmaking approaches. Relief printing has been in existence for centuries. For this assignment you will create a simple relief-print using a rubber printing block, cutting tools, ink, and paper. All materials can be found at Hobby Lobby, Michael's, or Texas Art Supply. Look for Speedball Block Printing Kit.
It includes these items:
• 4 x 5 Speedy Stamp
• lino handle and cutters
• tube of black, water-based block printing ink
• A 4" soft pop-in brayer
Requirements:
1. Rubber printing block 4" x 5", cutting tools, water based block printing inks, and paper for printing
2. Make 3 one-color prints that are solid and free from smudges (all printed from one printing block)
3. Turn in printing block and prints

Getting Started
1. Before you get started, organize your thoughts by sketching a design that you will cut in your printing block. When planning the image, keep in mind it will print backwards. What you carve away is the negative space, revealing the positive space as relief (please do not carve words on your printing block).
2. The print size will be 4" X 6", so you will need to work inside this size on the paper. If you're bold, you can try drawing directly onto the printing block with the marker. Darken in the areas with a marker to represent the print area. Remember, the areas that you cut will be the white of the paper. Ultimately, the sketch should be transferred onto the printing block, which will become the actual relief-printing surface. You can transfer the reverse of your image to your printing block using a pencil rubbing or a tracing technique.
3. Once the image is on the printing block surface, start cutting away none printing areas.
4. Once you have finished your cuts, you're ready to print.
5. The ink needs to be evenly spread out with a brayer (roller). Spread out about a tablespoon of ink with a tongue depressor or plastic spoon in the center of a palette. To spread the ink evenly, roll the brayer across the ink, lift it, then come back the other direction, lift the brayer, and repeat. Change directions, rolling back and forth at a perpendicular direction.
6. When the ink is evenly spread, Ink the block by rolling the inked brayer over its surface.
7. Your block is now ready to print, Place a sheet of paper over the inked block.
8. Apply pressure (with a press, using a wooden spoon, or by applying weight, such as a stack of books) to transfer ink to the paper.
9. Carefully pull off the print. Expect some texture in printed areas.
This is not a perfect process, moreover, our approach is quite crude, but expects flaws, appreciate accidents, and have fun!
You should turn you project in by uploading a digital photograph or scan of your project. Be sure to include: 1 printing block and 3 prints that are solid and free from smears.
