Simple: I want a screen-saver that shows the VIDEO from a standard source. I will need a setup screen, with the two common dialog-boxes for "Source Setup" and "Camera Adjustments". Create a check-box for Full-screen mode. Picture will be displayed in the center, with a border, unless full-screen. The border color will be Black. No frame, or skin... just the video image, and everything else black. Maybe a choice of 16-color pallet, optional. It occurs to me I should ask that the image move around, very slowly, so-as to prevent burn-in. START IN CENTER. A slider for speed, optional. Would like to be able to activate viewing mode via a Hot-Key. Setup screen should allow Hot-key selection. Also an enable check-box. Retain Hot-key, even in unchecked. Optimize for best framerate... Option: Display the Time and Date, randomly within border. Not available in full-screen mode. Option: Allow recording to file, if Hot-Key pressed. Generate unique filename. Date and time stamp required on file. Default directory is a setup field. Also an enable check-box. Retain Hot-key, even in unchecked. Perhaps a limit for recording? In seconds, or megabytes?? Must differ from other Hot-Key(s). Concept: -------- A store's counter-computer could display video from a camera, when the clerk wants (with a Hot-Key) - or after a Screen Saver delay (setup in the Display Properties page). The time and date would make it easy for the clerk to establish when IT happened... If he needs to he could hit the RECORD Hot-Key, and gather evidence... Should work with any and all video sources. Allow to pick from all available. Some sources include USB cameras, PCI Video capture cards. ISA Video capture cards, parallel capture devices, etc. Anything whose driver conforms to the "Video for Windows" specification. Since speed is an issue, prefer something written in C. Java might be acceptable. Other suggestions concidered: If you know a better way, I'm all ears. Must be very cheap. Likely will become freeware. If a C is available that could be kept open source, and later Linux too... There exists an equiv. to Video for Windows, called (get this) Video for Linux. Also the improved standard Video for Linux 2. Not very challenging, but potentially useful. I know one of you guys could have a polished program whipped-out in less than an hour with this one.
