Fix cart emptying and checkout process in Virtuemart

I need help with fixing the cart and the checkout process on my site. I don't know what is causing the problems, but here are some of the issues:
- Emails are not always sent to customer and admin after an order is placed
- When emails are not sent, customer does not get a confirmation page either (just blank white page)
- Cart occasionally empties when navigating site - especially when going from the cart back to the shopping area
- Coupon codes do not always work
This is using Joomla! [url removed, login to view] and and VM VirtueMart 1.0.9. To win this bid, you must have experience with Joomla and Virtuemart. Please reply with relevant experience.
