internet applications that work behind a router

I have a chat room application. The problem is it does not work when someone who is behind a firewall or there is a router in the way. I need it changed so even if someone is behind the firewall, it will still work properly. In order for me for mark it complete, I will have to be a host and you try to connect to me. If it works and we are able to chat, then I will mark it as being complete.
