Classifieds Advertising Website Development - Advice/ Consultation on Wordpress, Drupal, Sitecore, Umbraco etc

We are about to post a Freelancer project for the development of a new online classifieds advertising website. This website will be based in Australia & marketed in Australia, USA, & United Kingdom.

The structure of the website will be that people pay us to upload a text advertisement. They will pay a premium for things like uploading of photo(s), extended ad duration, to be in ‘featured listings’ etc. There are many requirements that we have for the website such as payment facilities, facebook feeds etc, but at this stage we are more interested in looking at what experienced web developers consider to be the best Open Source CMS for online classifieds advertising.

We will be using an open source CMS to keep development costs down. We need help/ advice on which CMS would best suit our needs. The three main factors that we will be using to decide on which CMS we will use are;

1. Capabilities/ functionality, this includes themes, plug-ins, quality of referrals sites that are using the same CMS, suitability for a classifieds website etc. Rather than list all of our requirements, we prefer some links to list of capabilities or other information for the different CMS and your advice based on your experience of specific capabilities that are better or worse from one CMS to the next, details on things that might be of interest or could be cause for concern for us operating a classifieds website.

2. Ease of use for management purposes. We are not web developers, so we will favour something that has a user friendly back end & management console. If there are some demo’s that you can refers us to, that would be great.

3. Site security. We will have paypal & credit card payment facilities. We will want this checkout facility & all of the site data to be extremely well protected from security breaches.

Our research so far has led us to two preferred options, Word Press & Drupal but we have looked at others such as Sitecore & Umbraco. We are open to suggestions for other CMS that you think may be more suitable, but at this stage the two mentioned look likely candidates, so are interested in hearing more about the suitability of Wordpress & Drupal.

What do we want from the winning bidder of this project?.....................

While there are many different styles/ themed classifieds websites in existence, we want someone to fast track our research and refer us to the Open Source CMS and/ or plug-in that would most closely resemble the theme/ arrangement of the following classifieds website: [login to view URL] We are aware that our example site is a high end website which most likely is custom engineered and not running off an open source CMS. We have included this example as a starting point as the layout/ arrangement & theme of this site is easily our favourite from what we have viewed so far.

We are looking for someone who can possibly show us some examples of sites in their portfolio’s that they have developed that are similar to our example. We will then need some questions answered regarding the CMS, plug-ins and overall development of the sites in your portfolio. Your portfolio sites would obviously have to be classifieds sites to resemble our sample.

Ultimately what we want from the winning bidder is some direction to give us a few more options and more information on the options mentioned, that we could consider and help us to finalise our research, so it will be favourable to offer links to demo’s of any suggested open source classifieds software similar to: [login to view URL]

This project does NOT require any web development.

We are only looking for some advice and discussion with an experienced web developer that has experience in classifieds web site and can help by giving us some direction and answers as detailed above.

I would estimate that this project would take no more than 30-45 minutes to complete for the wining bidder. To put some controls in for the bidders, we are happy to limit the correspondance to an exchange of 6 messages between parties to complete the project.
