I am a Phd in English literature and I need help to publish an article in a prestigious journal (Q1). I would like to write an article about Feminist literary jurisprudence applying this theoretical framework to two canonical works: Maria or the wrongs of woman by Wollstonecraft and Emma by Jane Austen. The present seminar on Feminist Literary Jurisprudence (FLJ) focuses on the intersections between law, literature and feminism and studies literary works that deal with women’s legal rights, or rather, with their absence. The discipline was developed in the 1980s by Anglo-American scholars who devoted their efforts to women’s writings, mostly to autobiographic accounts of women’s experience with trials involving family legal matters, such as divorce, private property, infanticide, custody, alimony, etc. Applying this theoretical framework, the seminar will show to what extent many women’s writings addressed feminist legal issues in the past and how a jurisprudential approach allows a better understanding of both their socio-political context and their particular feminist struggle. During the seminar we will read short texts by Mary Wollstonecraft, Jane Austen and George Eliot, who belonged to different periods in British history. From a gender perspective, female legal submission results from patriarchal laws; thus we will study how literary texts of the late 18th century and 19th centuries can reflect gendered legal injustices and therefore how the discipline of FLJ can contribute to the on-going struggle for equalitarian laws.
