IS SPINAL ANESTHESIA THE SAFEST ANESTHETIC FOR CESAREAN DELIVERIES COMPARED TO GENERAL ANESTHESIA?

Abstract
The number of women electing cesarean delivery increases from year to year worldwide. This method improves maternal and fetal outcome and reduce anticipated complications from spontaneous labor and vaginal delivery. This article will review the advantages and disadvantages for both general and spinal anesthesia in cesarean deliveries and we will also discuss the complications that can occur in mother and the newborn. The research was conducted reviewing articles from MEDLINE database and PubMed database. If the medical condition of the mother doesn’t necessitate general anesthesia then spinal anesthesia is safer to be performed, because the risk factors for an eventual death of the mother such as pulmonary aspiration and difficult intubation can be avoided.
