Do you like mangroves, fishing or are just wanting to do your bit for the environment? Then this is the project for you!
Firstly, I'm a marine ecologist and not a computer expert, so apologies for my difficulties in explaining what I require. But here goes...MangroveWatch is a small not-for-profit community-based environmental monitoring program designed to protect mangroves. Our volunteers collect video of mangrove shorelines which they send to me and I make assessments of mangrove condition. We split the video into frames and make assessments of each frame as to what is visible - species, erosion, dead trees, rubbish etc. At the moment this is done with an excel list. This is cumbersome and time consuming as there can be more than 1000 frames in a video. So, we need a good database for data entry that allows us to process 1000's of jpgs quickly and assign attributes to them.
The database needs dropdown lists and yes/no fields that have conditional associations. eg. if Mangrove Forest "YES", then show species dropdown list. There's alot of them. There will need to be some capacity to alter the fields as each location is slightly different. Most of the images will have the same attributes, so keeping attributes on between image records is ideal. The data needs to relate to the image number stored in its file name. If the database can embed the image so that it can be all in one package that would be great! Then of course capacity to download the data into excel would be the best. Also, we work with macs. So, we need a program that can embed 1000's of images, record the image file name, assign data attributes and have the capacity to quickly flick through many images that have the same attributes and then produce an excel spreadsheet and some kind of report all done on a mac. Easy?
This is probably a relatively easy VBA or SQL type program. I've seen similar type things done in LabVIew.
To complete this project will require some discussion between you and I over skype, so some level of English would be preferable - sorry.
Can you help?
