brief php code generator

I'm looking for some code that I can run using php3 or php4. The code needs to take text ($name) and pull the first letter and the last letter in the multi-worded string. I want to take the letters and turn them into a number (e.g., A = 1, B = 2, C = 3, etc.) I want it to give me a variable $firstletterNo and variable $lastletterNo (integers now) that I will then manipulate into a registration code. I want the code to given me the $firstletterNo and the $lastletterNo then add on a "D" and the date in format (mmyy). For example if the $name was "Arthur Rodgriguz", the code would pull the A and the Z. It would then give me the variable $firstletterNo = 1 and the $lastletterNo = 26. It would then put these strings together with the "D" and date as "126D0102" and display this as "Your registration code is: 126D0102". Anyone able to do this?
