Methods To Move Database From One Exchange Server To Another Discussed For moving mailboxes from Exchange Server database to another Server, there is Move Mailbox Wizard that is included in Exchange System Manager and Exchange Management Console. This wizard makes MAPI connection with the source Server, read data from the mailboxes, and then writes it to the destination Server. Once the mailboxes are moved, their content is removed from the source Server database and then the Active Directory attributes are updated so that the mailboxes point to be homed at the target Server. Benefits Here the advantage is, multiple mailboxes can be selected and moved across Servers. Moreover, to improve performance and efficiency, second mailbox cannot commence until first one is not moved. Although handling corruption is not possible with the move wizard but there are certain actions can be defined that will help to control the errors due to damage to the database. For example: The Move Mailbox wizard can be configured to skip corrupt messages while migration. Say, a limit is defined that if there are 100 corrupt messages in a mailbox, the move process should get terminated. This is the reason, it is recommended to backup the database at source Server as before the move process is stopped, the deleted messages will be permanently lost. Nevertheless, if the threshold limit for damaged messages does not exceed, an administrator can move database from one Exchange Server to another successfully. In the mailboxes are moved using Exchange Management Console, there is provision to skip entire mailbox if it is corrupt. Since migration process is time consuming, so it is up to the administrator as at what time the move should occur. Drawbacks • The Move Mailbox option works when database is to be moved within same Active Directory forest. • Since there is no option to work around corruption, it does not work if the database is damaged. • Data loss is permanent if the number of corrupt mails in the mailbox exceeds the defined limit. Alternative: If the above mentioned suggestion to move database from one Exchange Server to another does not work out, then some third party solution can be adopted. For moving mailboxes within same or different AD forest, Servers, domains etc, the best option is to migrate the mailbox into PST file and then import PST to desired Server. There are tools available online that for recovery of mailboxes database from offline EDB files and gives option to save it to PST file.
