I have developed many ways over the years to tackle DDoS and one method (can cost up to $1000 depending on the flexibility of it) is to have multiple filtering locations across the globe. This means if you are going to be DDoSed it will be filtered before making it to your server. However if the attack is too big it will only take out on location of about 50. This massively reduces the amount of downtime. If a location is down it will automatically relocate to a new location causing a max downtime for a small portion of users for only 15 seconds.
