I've done a lot of OS programming on Windows. I'd use CreateNamedPipe() to create a named, bi-directional pipe. The client process would connect with ConnectNamedPipe(). The rest is having the client process wait for the named pipe to open. Reversing the string and comparing is easy. You didn't say what OS this was to run on.
